Good to know

Frequently asked

What should I do if a pipe bursts? +
Turn the water off first. Your internal stopcock is usually under the kitchen sink, or sometimes in a downstairs cupboard or under the stairs — turn it clockwise until it stops. Then open all your cold taps to drain what's left in the pipes. If water is anywhere near lights, sockets or the consumer unit, switch the electrics off at the fuse box. Then ring us on 07903 447884. Knowing where your stopcock is before you need it saves an enormous amount of damage.
How much does a plumber cost around Failsworth and Oldham? +
It depends entirely on the job — a washer on a dripping tap and a full bathroom are worlds apart, and anyone quoting a firm price without seeing the problem is guessing. Ring or WhatsApp us with a description (a photo helps enormously) and we'll give you a price before any work starts, so there are no surprises when we're done.
How do I stop a tap dripping until you get here? +
Look under the sink for a small isolation valve on the pipe feeding that tap — a slot you can turn with a flat screwdriver. A quarter turn so the slot sits across the pipe shuts that tap off on its own, without killing the water to the whole house. If there's no isolator, the stopcock will do it. A drip is usually a worn washer or cartridge and is a quick, cheap fix — but left alone it will mark the basin and waste a surprising amount of water.
Why does my toilet keep running? +
Almost always one of two parts inside the cistern: the fill valve (which lets water in and won't shut off properly) or the flush valve/syphon (which lets water leak past into the pan). Both are inexpensive parts and a straightforward swap. A constantly running loo can waste hundreds of litres a day and it will show on a water meter — there's a before-and-after of exactly this job in our recent work.
My sink is blocked — what can I try myself? +
Start with a plunger and plenty of patience, or clear the trap: put a bowl underneath, unscrew the U-bend under the sink by hand, and clean it out. That solves most kitchen blockages, which are usually congealed fat and food. Avoid tipping in caustic drain cleaners repeatedly — they can damage older pipework and make the eventual repair worse. If it keeps coming back, the blockage is further along and worth looking at properly.
When is a radiator worth replacing rather than repairing? +
If it's cold at the bottom but warm at the top, that's sludge and usually a flush or a power flush rather than a new radiator. If it's pinholed, rusting through, weeping at the valve tails or you're changing the room around, replacing is the sensible call. Radiators are a good chunk of what we do — there are several installs and swaps in the gallery above.
How quickly can you get to me? +
Emergencies get priority and we'll always try for same-day, especially around Failsworth, Oldham and north Manchester. Routine jobs are usually booked within a few working days. Give us a ring and we'll tell you honestly what we can do rather than promising something we can't keep.
Do you work with landlords and businesses? +
Yes — a good part of our work is domestic and commercial maintenance for landlords, letting agents, shops and offices. We can arrange ongoing scheduled cover so problems get caught early rather than becoming emergencies.
Can I send a photo instead of explaining it? +
Please do. A quick WhatsApp photo of the problem often lets us give you a far more accurate price before we even arrive — and it saves you trying to describe a fitting you don't know the name of. WhatsApp us here.
